John Lennon's memorial

Glimpsing through the trees in Central Park NY, you can see the Dakota building where John Lennon lived and where his life was tragically ended by a gunman on 8th December  1980. He was shot four times in the back by Mark Chapman who is currently serving life in Attica prison near New York. John and Yoko lived on the 7th floor and their apartment looked over into Central Park and the area called Strawberry Fields.

There was nothing special about Strawberry fields ( no sign of any strawberry plants or fields for that matter) just a mixture of woodland and  small grassy areas. But now, 33 years after his death, it is a pilgrimage site for Lennon fans. Yoko paid for the mosaic memorial to be placed next to Strawberry fields.

Found this tribute to him in the peace garden at St John the Divine Cathedral

  1. I'm enjoying your NYC blog posts. You know more about it than most of us who live in this country!!!! ha ha .... I visited NYC once --but don't remember much about it since I was young. Need to go back sometime --but I'm not 'into' big cities much... Glad you are enjoying yourselves...

    Hugs,

  3. So much to see in the Big Apple ..... "Imagine" the view John and Yoko would have had looking out over Central Park.

  6. It is funny how he was English, yet New York took him to heart. He died a legend and they are nice tributes.

  7. It's weird to imagine how much time has passed since his death - in many ways it seems like yesterday! Ha! Seems like I can't comment about it without inadvertently using Beatles song titles ...
