Last visit to the lake

It was my final morning in Florida so off I went for my last walk around the lake.

The mocking bird was singing away on top of the lamp post.

I will miss my morning walks around this beautiful lake. As it was my last day we decided to spend the rest of the morning at Lake Worth beach. The sky was looking a little ominous by then but the rain never lasts long in Florida so off we went.

I couldn't have been more wrong.

Once the rain started it was torrential and it just didn't stop for hours. Time to go back to London!

Walking through the park

Sharing with 'Our World Tuesday'

After the game of golf I was desperate to see a little more of the natural world so A. took me to their local park, which was huge, and we walked along the nature trail.

A. kept warning me not to stray from the pathway as you never know what you might come across.

I think this is a dove cote but not sure. There was a whole row of them.

One of the many canals that stretch across Florida collecting the deluge of water that falls at this time of the year.

Keeping to the safety of the pathway as A. had recommended, we came across this snake which just  stopped in front of us. Although I thought it was a coral snake I didn't know which one. Once home with the aid of the photo and the internet we were able to identify it as an Eastern Venomous coral snake. Apparently as long as you find medical assistance within a couple of hours you will be ok!,

Golf in Florida

The first morning after returning from New York, A and N and myself went to play golf. I loved the golf course it was more like a nature trail and I found it difficult to concentrate on the game (not that that would make any difference to the standard of my game which was pretty dismal).

The sand cranes seemed to enjoy the golf course.

Last day in New York

These are a few of the last sights I saw in New York before returning to Florida.

In between 6th and 7th Ave. Such logical numbering of the streets.

The island was closed to visitors so we had to make do with a photo from afar.

Inside the Guggenheim
On the fifth floor of Trump Tower with its waterfall flowing down into the atrium and the gardens.
Van Gogh's 'Starry night' at the Museum of Modern Art
The final cocktails in Rosie O'Grady's bar (I think)
The view from the hotel window.

Weekend reflections from New York

The new World Trade Centre No1reflected in the 9/11 museum window

I found the memorial a fitting place to reflect and mourn the events of 9/11. Whilst in America the antennae was fitted which makes this building the highest in the USA as were the Twin Towers.

The two water features have been placed in the same positions as the original Towers.

The names of all those who died are stencilled into the bronze surround.

This bronze freize is outside the fire station nearest to 9/11 memorial.

Sculptures by Jane Alexander

In the Cathedral of St John the Divine we came across this exhibition by the South African artist - Jane Alexander. The sculptures were scattered around the Cathedral without titles or comments. The artist obviously wants the observer to think about the works and to draw their own conclusions.

Jane is from South Africa and was brought up during the apartheid regime. Her work reflects social and political issues. In this exhibition called Surveys (from the Cape of Good Hope) the leaflet in the Cathedral describes her work as follows:
In these recent works, dominant themes have included the extension and resilience of racially based prejudices and forms of discrimination, the reproduction of neo-colonial forms of domination, the ever growing obsession for security, and the parallel global proliferation of fortified borders and systems of surveillance.

Where known I have added the names of the figures.
