27 King Street, Covent Garden

This building is on King Street near Covent Garden. The ground floor is used by Moss Bros a formal menswear specialist but it is the upper floors that attracted my attention.

The upper floors are occupied by the Sun Alliance and London Insurance group. The most notable decoration on the building is a wreathed portcullis surmounted by the Prince of Wales's Feathers.
There is also an ironwork balcony stretching across the front with ball finials. The building dates from the 1850's.

Looking closely you can see the words Fire Office written around the portcullis in the ironwork. Originally these were the offices of the Westminster Fire Office but that became a subsidiary of the Alliance in 1968.

  6. Great photos - the decorations on the buildings are beautiful. I wish some of our modern buildings were not so plain and utilitarian.

  19. Beautiful building. The medallions and decorations, and gargoyles on beautiful old buildings are fascinating to me. I grew up in a small town in the western US, no old beautiful buildings. I never cease to wonder at City life!
