Cliveden

Cliveden House, former home of the Astor family, and now owned by the National Trust rests in 325 acres of wooded walks, water and terraced gardens. There are many sculptures and statues hidden around the grounds which sweep down the hillside to the River Thames.

The water gardens

Cliveden House now a luxury hotel:

The water tower masquerading as a clock tower.

Major refurbishment is taking place at the back of the house. There is a giant slide which the children loved as a way of getting down from the terrace.

Fountains

This baboon statue, found very recently in the undergrowth, has been identified by the British Museum as over 2000 years old.

Lots of topiary in one of the gardens.

Walking down the drive from the house we passed this classic E-type Jaguar from the 60s which was part of a photo shoot for 'Vanity Fair' magazine. The feature will focus on the Profumo affair which began at Cliveden.

  1. Very nice. I wonder which sacred place the baboon came from and who took it.

  5. They certainly knew how to live a nice life ! What a beautiful building and gardens ! My practical sense just told me how many window cleaners, cleaning stuff and gardeners you need to keep it nice and clean, lol. A little too expensive for my pension ! Therefore it is better in a National Trust.

  6. The English countryside is so beautiful! The gardens and stately buildings just enhance it further. Love that giant slide! We rarely see metal slides in our country as the sun makes them too hot to safely enjoy.

  19. Fun to stroll around places like that ... like immersing yourself in a book about a time and life so different from "normal" (whatever that is). I have read some of the books by or about the Astors and that slide seems right!
