Imperial War Museum North

This is the Imperial War Museum North. It was built in 2002 by the side of the Manchester Ship Canal. It is the newest of the 5 IWM and the first outside the SE of England. The others are:
IWM London
HMS Belfast London
Churchill War Rooms
IWM Duxford Cambridgeshire.

It was designed by Daniel Libeskind and is based on a world shattered by the conflict of war. The globe has been broken into three main shards to be reconstructed as a museum. The three shards representing conflict on land, sea and air.

  2. Interesting. You have so many places that are fascinating to write about. I'm glad you do, too. :-)

  3. I've been to two of the museums but still have visit two more now this makes three though the design is totally lost on mt. Personally I think it is a rubbish looking building and the designer has no idea what he was doing. Whats it like inside?

  4. You are going to think I am following you around London! I have this on my list for this trip, too! I'll be interested in what you thought of the inside. I think the outside design is interesting, now that I know why it was designed that way.
What is the white vertical structure to the far left? Is it part of a bridge?

    1. Oops, I meant the RAF Museum in Hendon! I also intend to go back to the IWM to see the part that was closed when we were there last year.

  5. Daniel Libeskind is an impressive architect. I have seen the Holocaust monument in Berlin with the same grey concrete colours. I like his symbolic ideas.

  6. Neat to have FIVE Imperial War Museums in England... That is such an important museum ---and hopefully, many people will be able to attend one or more of them... Made me wonder how many more people could attend some of our special museums in our country IF they were spread out into different areas... BET more people could and would attend...
    Hugs,
    Betsy
