St Pancras

Beneath the clock in St Pancras International station, London, you will find this 20 tonne bronze statue called 'The Meeting'. Created by Paul Day it stands over 30ft high and tries to reflect the romantic side of travelling. Modelled on himself and his half-French wife, the sculptor wanted to show the meeting between an Englishman and his French lover. (St Pancras is home to the Eurostar train, London's gateway to Europe.) The statue has had many critics who felt it was too large and detracted from the beautiful railway station's architecture.

Below the statue is a frieze depicting different journeys on a railway theme.

  1. I would have to see it in situ to judge whether it fits or not, but I really like it as a sculpture. Hmmm, it does look rather big and perhaps out of proportion to its surrounds. You have seen it. What do you think?

  2. I think it's quite lovely, but it is hard to tell if it's too large or not. I like it myself. What a beautiful place!

  5. I agree with Bill ... it adds a touch of romance to this very busy station. I've travelled from Paris to Ashford ... maybe next trip I'll make it all the way to St Pancras.

  6. What a gorgeous station... And that statue is HUGE.. Wow---very interesting... I love the romantic theme since there is usually lots of romance going on at railroad stations --and other travel places.. I love that statue.

  7. hee hee... «Louis» always messes up the name "St. Pancras". He always wants to say (ahem) pancreas...

The statue may be large, but it certainly captures the romance often found with traveling!

  10. Now that's a place I know by heart and all corners too ! Once I waited for 4 h for my Eurostar because outside it poured that much that I couldn't go elsewhere. So I took pictures from everything worthwhile to see in this station ! In the last two years the surroundings have changed a lot. At least there are some cafés and restaurants now before there was just nothing !
