Whale watching and the zoo

Today is my last full day in Sydney so I needed to make the most of it. I decided to go whale watching. Not an easy decision as I get very sea sick. But armed with travel bands and tablets off I went.

Just look at the colour of that sky - perfect.

It was a 3 hour trip and within the first half-hour we saw a group of 4 hump-backed whales, one of which was a calf. We were able to watch them for over 2 hours as they dived and splashed their tales and even leapt out of the water. I was captivated by the sight.

I gave up trying to get a decent photo but at least you can see there was something in the water.
Also spotted some dolphins but as we were following the whales we didn't stop to observe them.

As the water was reasonably calm, on the way back to Sydney I decided to get the ferry over to Taronga zoo as I wanted to see some Australian wild life. I wasn't disappointed. I was fascinated by the platypus and the equidna,  animals I had read about and seen pictures of but had never seen them up close. Would love to show you pictures but after just a few the battery in my camera ran out probably because I took so many rubbish ones of the whales. Here are the few photos I managed to take.

Pied cormorant

Tomorrow I leave before 10am to catch a flight to Townsville. At least there won't be any jet lag involved. When I returned to this hotel in Sydney after my first outing, I remembered my floor number but not the room number which of course is not on the key card. After trying 2 different rooms I had to sheepishly go down to reception and ask which was my room. That was after only the second hotel. What I'll be like after the eighteenth I've no idea.

  1. Lovely photos from the zoo! Getting decent shots of whales is very hard, I've tried myself and usually gotten 1 decent one for dozens of bad ones!

    Whalewatching and humpbacks?! I'm jealous!

You've definitely had a great time in Sydney! Can't wait to hear about Townsville! (what's there?)

    Bon voyage!
