After having a short rest back at the hotel I set off in the afternoon to see what lay at the other end of the promenade. It didn't go on more than a few hundred metres when the pathway beside the sea ended in mangroves and dense forest. Then I noticed a sign pointing the way to an 8.4km circuit around Cairns as part of their keep active programme so I just followed the signs. It led me across a level crossing
Down a narrow path
and then I saw a sign for the Botanic gardens.
I can never resist gardens so I made a detour from the walk and made my way into the gardens.
I've never seen spider's webs like these. They just went on and on. Now of course, at home, spiders are quite harmless creatures unless you are an insect but here in Aus I wasn't too sure so I didn't want to get too close.
I did see some plants I had never seen. Unfortunately I didn't make a note of their names and needless to say I can't remember.
To get an idea of the size of this one I tried to photograph myself next to it

Gosh, that purplish flower is huge and so are the spiderwebs! xx

ReplyDeleteThe animals are so different from the ones you know and many of them are dangerous, like the spiders indeed. People are very aware of the dangers in Australia, we had really got used to it when we were there. We were rather lighthearted, but were warned to take warnings seriously.
