The Economist's plaza

Just off St James's street is the Economist's Plaza - home to the magazine of that name. Walking past I happened to glance in and notice this larger than life sculpture. At first I didn't realise it was a sculpture as from a distance it looked so life like. But as I approached this rather desolate looking man I realised that unless giants had taken over London then this was the work of a talented scultptor. There were 3 figures in the plaza:
The seated man

The walking woman

Woman (Being looked at)
They are the works of Sean Henry. I will now have to search out any further examples of his work.

At the other side of the Plaza was this water feature called 'The Eclipse'. Difficult to show just how fascinating it was by still photos but I'm sure you get the idea.

  2. An interesting plaza. The sculptures are very life like but you say they were bigger than real people that is a bit hard to notice in the photos. Shame you didn't have a real person close by to give us an idea of perspective. The hand rail in the last shot does give the idea of the size of the sculpture. I like the old man best.

  4. I've seen quite a few realistic, life-sized sculptures... but none that look so life-like! Particularly the "Seated Man"! I can only imagine the odd thoughts in people's minds when they see him sitting there in the London rain without moving from his seat... ;o)

  11. Wow - that is talent! I, too, would have been taken in by the seated man - thinking he was real. The Eclipse looks fascinating; would love to see it in operation. Thanks for Sharing.

  15. What interesting sculptures! And I so enjoyed your Olympic memories. It will be a hard act to follow. I'm an English Australian and it all made me feel quite homesick.

  17. These are good statues. Now, I have no objection to modern art, but when things are displayed in public I think they need to be a little more accessible than some abstract blob! These fit the bill very well.

In Angry Birds you fire the birds in the catapult (!) at buildings made by the pigs who stole the birds eggs! If you knock the buildings down you get points! Its deeply silly, rather good fun and about all I can manage to do some times on the train home from work!

  18. Splendid art installations! We ought to have more of these in other public places. These remind of the Crystal building down in Manhattan's Liberty Plaza wherein they piped in at the immense lobby area a continuous flow of Brian Eno's ambient music. It was delightful yet meditative.

    Cheers!

  21. You know one of the things I love about London is that you think you know the place so well and then you discover bits like his, hidden gems, you had no idea where there.

  23. I like the stone building seen behind the “woman being looked at” sculpture and the eclipse is an imaginative construct that I am sure is fascinating to see in person. So nice to see the creativity of them all!
