Tivoli Gardens Copenhagen

A couple of weeks ago I spent four days in Copenhagen. It was my first visit to Denmark and just being a couple of hours flying time from London, it was perfect for a city break. In the heart of Copenhagen is the Tivoli gardens. It is the second oldest theme park in the world, opening in 1843. It is said that Walt Disney got the idea of opening a theme park after he visited here. The gardens were a favourite of the fairy tale writer, Hans Christian Anderson , who lived in Copenhagen.
There is a lot crammed into a small space compared to modern theme parks.
Easy to walk around, lots to see and enjoy.

The  wooden roller coaster from 1914 is one of only seven in the world that has a brakeman on board every train.

I enjoyed my visit to Tivoli Gardens but in case you are wondering I didn't go on the rides.

  2. Oh My Goodness.... I have heard of the Tivoli Gardens all of my life ---but never knew that it was more than the gardens... A theme park there? I had no idea....

Well--I'd love the gardens --but am way too old for the theme park... ha

I talked about a new book you would enjoy reading on my blog today....

  3. It looks like a magical place, even for my advanced age group!! I love the fact that it is small with a lot packed into the small area. I am trying to imagine what it would be like to have the job of brakeman on a roller coaster! (I used to work in Career Education and I've gotta' say that occupation never did come up in the interest and aptitude tests we administered ;>)!!

  6. I have heard of the gardens but I didn't realise it was also an amusement park. It looks very well set up and I like seeing the flowers in bloom too. The roller coaster at our Luna Park has a brakeman, well often as not a brakewoman.

  7. It really is quite a small area, we walked around it, not wanting to go in. I believe you had to pay an entrance fee to go in and since none of us wanted to go on the rides and we DID want to see the little mermaid, that's where we headed!

  10. I like the idea of the brakeman. Very good idea.
Your photos are wonderful. It is indeed hard to believe there are so many wonders...I've always wanted to visit Tivoli Gardens, not for the rides but for the beauty.
    Thanks for sharing.

  11. The our girls were young we used to go to an amusement park each summer. It's been a long time. As I viewed the rides I did wonder which ones you had been on. Then I read your last line. Not a one called to you to "ride me. ride me!"?
