Vancouver

.We packed up and left our lovely log cabin in Lake Louise. We drove through the mountains for a little while but then it was time to say goodbye to the majestic Rockies as we journeyed through the prairies and reservations. It was flat, boring countryside as we made our way to the airport in Calgary..

It is a short flight from Calgary to Vancouver so there was time to explore our surroundings once we had checked into the hotel. We were staying on Robson Street and I was pleased that we had a very large room with a balcony and huge window as we were on the 10th floor. We could just see the sea peeping out between two very tall between buildings.
Off to explore I noticed that many buildings looked newly constructed with numerous glass ones reflecting others.

The designs on this building caught my eye. It is the Marine Building.
Built in 1930 it was the tallest building in the British Empire

.

It is an excellent example of art deco.

It was a short walk from the hotel to the harbour. The yachts were huge and looked very expensive. We had a walk along the sea wall admiring the boats.

We finished off the evening in a fish restaurant at Coal Harbour called  Caderos The food was delicious as was the wine and the gin. It was a wonder we found our way back to the hotel!

  1. Love Vancouver... Used to drive up there for short vacations when we lived in Oregon. Learned new things here though... Didn't know about the tallest building in the British Empire though. Interesting factoid!

  7. Not a building I picked up on when we were there, and how wonderful it is, but I do remember Robson Street with its many restaurants and the trolley buses

  10. That takes me back as we briefly lived in Vancouver (in the city next to Stanley park) a few years ago. You were very lucky with the weather! I love the Marine building and much as I love Vancouver I think that there are too many glass shiny buildings now which all look very similar and will date at roughly the same time. The scenery is gorgeous though. Lovely photos!

  11. I love Vancouver, which is about an hour's drive away from Bellingham, where I live. If it were not for having to cross the border, we'd visit more often. Better yet, have my friends (like you) visit and take fabulous pictures! Thanks for the tour, and I hope you had safe travels home. :-)

  13. I love the Art deco style, glass box buildings and skyscrapers are not so to my taste !

  14. I was in Vancouver in the 80s...beautiful city...but it was awash with graffiti (especially anywhere around the trains). Has that improved?

  15. I believe the restaurant is called Carderos. My mother eats there sometimes. Nice to see some old haunts of Vancouver again. Isn't that Marine building beautiful!

  19. I love that old building. Such a shame that so many of those old buildings (probably) had to make way for those new glass monstrosities.
