Icefields Parkway and the Num-Ti-Jah Lodge

Leaving our small log cabin in Jasper, we saw this very pregnant mule deer watching us closely. We were on our way to Bow Lake via the Icefields Parkway.

We stopped numerous times to admire the scenery and take the obligatory selfie, of course.

We turned off the Parkway to look at the Athabasca Falls.
They were spectacular for the volume of water descending, rather than the height of the falls.

Our lunchtime time stop overlooked the Athabasca River with clear views of the mountains.

More sightings of wildlife with mountain goats and long horned sheep.

It wasn't long before we reached the Columbia Icefield and the Athabasca Glacier

There was an icy wind blowing down from the glacier but we still managed another selfie!

Not far from the icefield we turned off the main road to reach the Num-Ti-Jah mountain lodge on the shores of Bow Lake.

The Lodge was built in 1937 by Jimmy Simpson who was a pioneer guide and outfitter in the Rockies. (The name Num-Ti-Jah is the Stoney people's name for the pine martin.)

The views from the Lodge must be some of the best you will find anywhere.

A few steps from the Lodge and you are rewarded with these views of the Lake

But thebest view of all for me had to be the one from the bedroom window. Spent most of the evening gazing over the Lake at the mountains. I had hoped to see the stars but it was almost a full moon, making it a bright evening and difficult to see many.

  6. The ice fields are an amazing sight but dwindling fast. We were there in 1999 after Emily's high school graduation. I'm sure they're quite a bit smaller now. Looks like you found a lovely place to stay.

  9. Superb scenery that doesn't need a narrative. All that raging water looks rather cold but your lodge looks comfy and warm after a day in the great outdoors of Canada.

  10. A great series of photos. The scenery is magnificent and you were fortunate to see all the wildlife - especially the Long-horned Sheep! When I visited that area many years ago I especially wanted to see the Sheep - but did not!

  21. Hi from another retired teacher (and former school administrator). We pretty much put all of our wishes into one bucket and purchased an off the grid floating cabin in British Columbia. We still travel a bit, but prefer to be home at the cabin most of the time in all seasons. Even after fourteen years it's exciting every day. - Margy

  27. Beautiful views of the falls and the mountains. You've been fortunate to get close enough to the wildlife for some good photos. I could use some of that glacier air. We've been having one of the hottest summers ever here in South Carolina.
