Arriving in Canada

For those of you who are regular followers of my blog, you will know about my bucket list and how that became the reason for starting the blog.
#7 on my 'Around the World' section of the bucket list  was to ride on the Rockie Mountaineer train so how lucky am l to have a friend in Canada who was willing to, not only organise a trip to the Rockies for me, but also be the driver. Marilyn lives in Edmonton, Alberta, and that was where my latest adventure started a couple of weeks ago. Arriving at the airport I was greeted by this large living wall. Supposed to be the largest in North America. Not sure about that claim but it was much better to see that than the usual advertising billboards.

Edmonton is the capital of Western Alberta and is the fifth largest city in Canada with a population of over 1,300,000. Its claim to fame is the West Edmonton Mall which is the largest in North America and the 10th largest in the world.
Within the Mall there is a beach;
An Amusement Park

Skating Rink

I wasn't too happy to see this penguin being paraded through the Mall to advertise the Aquarium. And yes, before you ask it is a real penguin.

In the centre of Edmonton there are  numerous  high rise buildings but fortunately they haven't completely destroyed all their heritage buildings to make way for them.

But when the whole building couldn't be saved , at least bits and pieces have been preserved

 The City Hall

The Art Gallery

 Driving back out to the suburbs over the Saskatchewan River.

  8. The art gallery is interesting architecture. Modern art galleries should be a bit unusual. The city looks pleasant enough. The indoor beach is funny, but I guess they do suffer extreme cold there and much living is done indoors.

  16. The art gallery is an interesting building and I've never seen bits of old buildings preserved that way. That's quite a mall. Seems like it would take a few days to do all it has to offer.
