Crystal Palace

The Crystal Palace National Sports Centre and Athletic stadium were created in the 1960s and it is still used to host a number of events today.  The sports centre  is situated in  Crystal Palace park in South London. The park was created for the relocation of Crystal Palace which had held the Great Exhibition in  Hyde Park in 1851. The large glass and iron structure was opened by Queen Victoria in 1854. Sadly it was destroyed by fire in 1936

A train station was opened close by in 1854 to transport people to and from the Palace.

Today trains from the station take you into Central London.

  2. That is a big station when you see the outside. Crystal Palace is where the London to Brighton mini run starts, I have done it a couple of times

  5. Wasn't the crystal palace used for football games? I think I remember my father watching them on tv. I never knew what it looked like though.

  7. Awww this dear Cristal Palace, how often we went there (son and girlfriend and me) . They had bought special kites and let them fly in the air. I read the story of the Cristal Palace later. At the end of the 80's there were still some remnants. It was such a good time !

  8. I realise the train station near the Palace was opened in 1854 to transport people to and from the events, so it was sort of peripheral to the success of the Palace. However, as it turned out, it was actually a core part of the architectural history of the area.
