Chicago

I am visiting Chicago in June and  am hoping to take the train to visit towns/cities within a few hours of Chicago. I have never been to this part of the USA before and am looking for some in house knowledge. I will spend about a week looking around Chicago which leaves me a few days to travel around. Where would you suggest?

Milwaukee, Indianapolis, St Louis, Cincinnati, Grand Rapids, Springfield?

Would be grateful for any ideas you might have.

  2. First what surprises me is that there may be trains between those cities you list. Ok. I checked and there is train travel. Springfield IL is an interesting spot if you want to find more about Lincoln. There's also a train to St. Louis I discovered and that is a city worth visiting. Can't speak for any of the others.

  3. I lack any knowledge beyond if you use Amtrak, don't have tight times for anything.

  4. While you are still in Chicago, my favourite visits were 1) Bauhaus' move from Berlin, and 2) Frank Lloyd Wright's treasures.

  5. Go to TripAdvisor dot com and check out the Things to do. Do you like art museums, historic walking tours, theater, etc. Then let that influence your decision. I live near Detroit which is a 5 hour train trip and the train goes thru Grand Rapids. Detroit has a world class art museum, a variety of theaters, zoo, historical museum and the huge Eastern Market downtown. Several companies offer walking tours of various areas including the Riverfront. June is a good month for outdoor festivals. If you pick Detroit, let me know and I’ll meet you for lunch.

  6. I traveled with our high school choir to Chicago and would love to return! The Navy Pier was fun, great shopping on the Miracle Mile and I could have spent an entire day at the Museum of Science and Industry. My daughter and son-in-law were just there for work and did a tour of German restaurants (on their own).

  8. It’s been a while since I left the Midwest, but I can recommend the Museum of Science and Industry, and the Art Institute has always been a favorite with some really nice pieces of art. https://www.thecollector.com/art-institude-chicago/
Grant Park right downtown and Millennium Park are iconic Chicago. There is a walking tour of the artwork at Millennium Park. https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/depts/dca/supp_info/mp1.html
Chicago Cultural Center is cool. https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/depts/dca/supp_info/chicago_culturalcenter.html
Those would keep you busy for a day or two!
