There are 39 theatres in the West End of London with another 54 venues outside the West End. I wonder how many will survive this Covid crisis?
This is Leicester Square in the heart of the West End. It was 10am on Saturday when I took these photos. There was hardly anyone there. There are very few tourists in London at the moment which means many restaurants, cafes and shops have not reopened.Could almost be an advert for social distancing.
Don't think I have ever seen the Lego shop or M and M's without queues outside. There again it could just have been the rain keeping everyone indoors.
It does seem really strange to see London so devoid of people. I think it's not only the virus but also the rain. Thanks for the great pictures! :-)
ReplyDeletethose statues are clever! What inventive minds.
ReplyDeleteThere may have been a couple more people if there'd been no rain. But if you're in London to see the sights rain shouldn't deter you. It's Covid!
ReplyDeleteThe statues are excellent.
ReplyDeleteIt is frightening to see the empty cities, here as well. It is nice to have a better look at the cities how they were meant to be before the tourists waves took over the cities. But at the same time it is bad for many cafes, restaurants, museums etc, etc. I think there will come difficult times for everyone....
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteIt seems Covid will have an affect on businesses around the world. It is the same here in my state. We are trying to support our local restaurants with carry-out. I just love all the statues. Take care, enjoy your day! Wishing you a happy new week!
Sad to see London so empty but good for photographers. The rain doesn't usually empty London.
ReplyDeleteAh - lovely shots. I really like the sculptures!
ReplyDeleteAt some point we will all have to pay more taxes so as to get back to normal. I like that you realised this opportunity for photography.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos of Leicester Square ~ I remembering being there ~ fun place ~ ^_^

Poor Paddington! I bet he wonders what has happened. I love the statues in this park and have sat down for a rest with many a cup of morning coffee in the very spots you have shown. Oh how I miss the world “out there”!
ReplyDeleteThe rain won't have helped but it must be so hard for those working in the theatres - or probably not working any more. We need good evidence on how immunity works if you've had the virus and vaccines that work. No short term fix unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteI assume that's Mr. Bean.
ReplyDeleteIts good to be able to find a positive about Covid times.
ReplyDeleteI love the one of Mr Bean - very cool
ReplyDeleteOh I do hope our West End survives all this - it has been a good trip around memory lane wandering leicester Square with you - my last trip to the UK!
ReplyDeleteWren x
I just heard that most theaters on Broadway here have shuttered until May, It is sad to see so many places empty but makes it easier to get a good photo. Stay safe...Janey
ReplyDeleteSince Leicester Square was first home to picture theatres in the 1930s, it seems like a perfect place to create and place statues about cinema characters. Do we know when the statues were installed?
ReplyDeleteThey were only unveiled in Feb 2020 and were only going to be there for a few months. I don't think a decision has been made as to their future.
DeleteThose are all just great for the area! I guess people-free statues is one good thing about this mess we’re in .. Theaters dark, maybe permanently, is definitely not good. Scary times we’re living in. I wonder how many changes will be permanent.
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful statues! I especially like the ":singing In the Rain" one of the man hanging off the lampost.
