So instead of packing my case with summer clothes and getting on a flight to Hanoi tomorrow I will be putting my waterproofs and woolies into a backpack and heading north in my little car (once I have had a new tyre put on it!!).
The risk for me of bringing back the coronavirus from Vietnam, Cambodia or Thailand to my family (my daughter's health puts her into a high risk category) was too high. I would also have to go into self isolation for 14 days.
The downside is that I cannot claim a refund either from the travel company or my insurance company as travel is still being allowed to these countries. Anyway, I'll let you know where I end up over the next couple of weeks on my trip around the UK on a shoestring.
It was the right decision.
ReplyDeleteI agree! You don't know what is coming in the next few weeks, but the coronavirus does not show any signs of letting up quite yet. :-)
ReplyDeleteWe had to do the same. We were going on a cruise ship and we spent weeks worrying about what to do. Our girls rang and convinced us not to go. Talk about turning the tables. It used to be us convincing them not to go to dangerous places. We don't get refunded either. So can understand how you are feeling.
ReplyDeleteI feel desperately sorry for the travel agents, airport staff, plane pilots and cabin staff who have lost their jobs, but family health comes first.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your local travel plans :)
Yes it is a mondial problem at the moment, we have to deal with it I am afraid. Sorry bad luck for the refund....
ReplyDeleteVietnam or England, you are bound to see beautiful things. And Vietnam is not going anywhere, you can always go there once this whole thing has disappeared in our collective memories!
ReplyDeleteHello, Sorry about the loss of your trip money. I think you are making the right decision. It is best to keep yourself and your family healthy and safe. Enjoy your road trip, have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteDitto to all said above. If you make it to Scotland stop by Dunblane to see their cathedral. I'm sure you;ll find lots to see.
ReplyDeleteThink that was a smart and thoughtful decision. Hope you do get your refund eventually. Enjoy your road trip. Sounds like an excellent plan B.
ReplyDeleteIt's such a shame that you have to give up the trip but, I totally understand your thoughtful decision. I have a good friend who is weighing the pros and cons of trip next month which is a river cruise in Europe.
ReplyDeleteHard decision to make since you do not get your money back. I’m a little surprised that the tour company doesn’t allow you to rebook it. When the first cases hit our state, we will no longer eat out or go to the gym. I finally finished physical therapy this week and I am glad because the equipment there would also be a worrisome source. Anyway, enjoy your car trip!
ReplyDeleteWe also cancelled our February - March travel plans.
ReplyDeleteOh I almost always scroll back and read any of your posts I’ve missed, unless I’m terribly swamped, but I certainly would have done that today no matter what. I am sorry you had to cancel your plans, but your reason makes perfect sense and is the choice I would have made. In fact, I Too am worried more about our daughter than about us. (She has a chronic illness.). My fingers are crossed for everyone to stay well and for it to be better when it is time for us to go home to Oregon. ..... I know you will make the most of your “shoestring” travels closer to home and I look forward to reading about them.
ReplyDeleteThat's sad and at the same time I would be very furious all that because of this virus. I am rather an adventurer, but here I wouldn't go either. Of course you will see beautiful things in your country. I saw so many, but it is not the same. Try to make the best out of it there is nothing else to do !
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry that you had to cancel your trip! I know how disappointing that is as we also canceled an upcoming cruise that was beginning in Venice, Italy We lost our deposit but, like you, we were concerned about health issues that put us at greater risk. Better to be safe. Stay healthy!
ReplyDeleteSuch a shame you had to cancel. There are some difficult decisions to make at the moment for many people, including us for May. Clearly your family must come first if there is even a slight risk of passing on illness. Let's hope things improve soon. Stay safe.
ReplyDeleteTotally understand your decision although I know you must be disappointed not to get to Vietnam - yet! I hope you enjoy your alternative plans and I look forward to hearing about them.
ReplyDeleteIf you paid via credit card check to see if there is a travel insurance part to it - we did and got somewhat of a refund when we had to cancel a trip.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I'm a little late to this post, I think you made the right decision.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
I am sure you made the right decision, thinking about possibly becoming infected and not wanting to spread the virus, especially to your daughter. Be well and enjoy your travels closer to home.
ReplyDeleteGlad you used common sense and did not go. I found out the other day my best friends son went to Morocco and now cannot get back so you did the right thing
