Whilst in Naples we saw this craftsman carving cameos from pieces of shell.
The shell is perfect as the inside is a different colour to the outside so the outer surface is removed to reveal an image on a contrasting background.

I didn't realize cameos were still being created by hand. Interesting to see how it's done. I was given an antique one as a confirmation gift but it just sits in my jewelry box these days as I don't dress up to wear it anymore.
