Wellington Arch

I have been away for a couple of weeks and meant to post this before I left.

This is Wellington Arch at Hyde Park Corner.

This is a Triumphal Arch which now stands on a large traffic island. You can go inside the Arch where there is an exhibition about its history, and you can also stand above the Arch which gives you a great view down Constitution Hill.

The Household Cavalry go through the Arch each day on their way to changing the guard at Buckingham Palace. Looking out of the windows in the Arch I saw the Guards going under the Arch. Then I raced up the stairs to watch them from the balcony as they rode their horses down to the Palace.
The following week I happened to be there again as the Guards came through the Arch.

  3. Does it matter than political and military changes since the 1820s have inevitably made a difference to the Wellington Arch's name, sculpture and purpose? Nothing stays the same.

  4. That's interesting to know that you can go inside the arch ! I see you rediscover London before discovering the rest of the world ! There are a lot of strikes going on in Brussels, nearly every day so, I prefer to stay in my little Waterloo !

  5. There's a special right of way set aside for the horses I see. Where have you been off to?

  6. I’ve visited the arch a few times but never been inside. Looks like quite a good vantage point from the top.

  7. Just there at the right time. Great captures. The latest joke is the changing of the guards happens every day and the changing of the prime ministers is every week.

    All the best Jan.
