Boats on the Thames

This is the boat that has become known as Boaty McBoatface. It is the polar research ship about to embark on its maiden voyage to Antarctica. Its correct name is RSS Sir David Attenborough.
The boat docked at Greenwich last Thursday as part of a three day celebration hosted by the British Antarctic Survey and Royal Museums Greenwich. It has been undergoing sea trials around the UK and is now ready for service. Its aim is to conduct world leading and ground breaking research in the Antarctic and Arctic regions.

A public vote to name the ship came up with Boaty McBoatface but officials intervened and named it after the well known  and respected broadcaster and natural scientist Sir David Attenborough. A research submarine carried on the ship has taken the name voted by the public. I think to the public the ship will always be called Boaty McBoatface

Another boat I spotted on the Thames this week was The Kismet which was moored east of Tower Bridge. This 95 m long super yacht was built in 2014 for the billionaire Shahid Khan. I believe you can rent the yacht for $1.2 million a week so if you are thinking of a little break on the water somewhere this is what it offers:
State of the art luxury spa, movie theatre, grand piano, sauna, jacuzzi and barbecue area. It has a 'champagne and caviar theme' including a black marble deck, a full gym, helipads and a lift. One of the bath tubs is made of solid onyx and there is a retractable fireplace with an integrated waterfall and a winter garden deck. The aft deck is connected to a sports bar and can be transformed into a dance floor if needed. The downside is it can only welcome 12 guests in 7 lavish cabins so it might not have accommodation for the whole family!

  1. Not naming the ship Boaty McBoatface must be one of the worst abuses of democracy in recent times! I believe Shahid Khan owns Fulham FC so he can just pop upriver to Craven Cottage to watch the game.

  2. You have given me quite a bit of information I wouldn't have known otherwise. I also actually LOVE the idea of the Boaty McBoatface name!

  3. More like ships to me. I cannot think of a bigger waste of money that the Kismet think of what that could have been used for

  5. $100,000 per person for a week. Our absolute upper limit for a week's accommodation would $700 pp pw. A bridge too far.
An attempt was made here to name a new Sydney ferry, Ferry McFerryface. It failed.
We have a new Antarctic ice breaker come supply ship, RSV Nuyina. She was made in Romania, a country well versed in making ice breaking ships. No?

  6. The Attenborough is something of value.

The Kismet is testimony to man's arrogance and should be sunk in a storm with its owner on board.

  7. I am not sure that spas, jacuzzis, waterfalls and saunas will be as essential in the polar regions as VERY comfortable cabins and lots of heating.

  8. Oh, well it has the grand piano, which is something I always want when booking accommodation! And the fact it has a fireplace and waterfall in one sounds very safety conscious! I will consider it for my next holiday...

  9. Good to know what Boaty McBoatface is up to these days. And also what billionaires spend their money on. Can’t get over the waterfall and fireplace on board.

  10. Oh too bad, there are too many people in our family for that yacht -- we will have to look elsewhere for accommodations! Wow incredible all that stuff on that floating mansion. ....... It was (seriously) very interesting reading about the research boat and all planned for it to accomplish -- and I'm glad they at least named the dinghy as the people voted. Too funny.
