Amritsar

These photos are from slides that I took when I was in India in the mid 70s. We travelled to the Punjab in the northwest to visit the city of Amritsar. It was one of the most stunning sights I had ever seen.
Coming from the crowded streets, this was the view that took our breath away. The Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) is the holiest gurdwara in the Sikh religion.

It is in the middle of a lake where  the worshippers bathe.

Food is prepared and served free to anyone who visits the gurdwara.

These may have been taken inside the temple but not sure. It was such a long time ago.

  1. That is a beautiful building and setting in the lake. I like how your framed it as you approached it, over the heads of the crowd.

  4. I too haven't been to India for 20 years, but the Golden Temple was so beautiful, and so unusual in the lake, I will remember it for a long time. Do the worshippers bathe in the lake to cleanse their bodies? Or because the water is holy?

    1. Both those reasons are valid but I don't know for sure.

  14. India is truly fabulous country. Loved it so much we went five times. Gone off long haul now so the nearest we get is a home made tandoori chicken.

  16. What a great trip. Amazing, that beautiful temple seemingly floating in the Lake! Our two older grandsons have both spent time in India (the older and his wife on a six-month honeymoon!), so I’ve seen lots of amazing slides and blogposts, but this I don’t remember. Must ask. (It hasn’t been quite that long ago for either of them, but it has been a few years). It’s wonderful you have those memories!

  17. The last 2 photos are not from the Golden Temple but from Durgiana temple in Amritsar dedicated to Goddess Durga. The Sikhs are not idol worshippers and it is the Granth Sahib or the Holy book that they worship in their Gurudwaras/temples.
