In June 2016, Transport For London changed the symbols on the traffic lights around Trafalgar Square in celebration of Pride in London festival. Instead of the usual man walking at a pedestrian crossing, the lights featured same sex partners holding hands with hearts above them, as well as different gender symbols
50 traffic lights were changed They were only supposed to be a temporary change but have proved very popular and a number of them have been retained permanently.
While I am not so keen on the male/female symbols, I like the first figures.
ReplyDeleteI am often reminded at how much more progressive you are in the UK. Here in the US, those symbols would be defaced or complained about by the homophobes. Glad to know it's not the same everywhere. :-)
ReplyDeleteEvery one to their own I suppose but they make a refreshing chance to the normal lights
ReplyDeleteThat's different!
ReplyDeleteClever! I didn't even know the symbols could be changed.
ReplyDeleteI love these. I remember the furor that some people thought they were confusing (like how stupid do you have to be not to work it out??). I snapped them every time we came across them...
ReplyDeleteIt's an interesting idea and nice designs.
ReplyDeleteOh those are awesome! I'll have to show this to my traffic engineer co workers.
ReplyDeletecool, did ot know they could do such things :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a strange world we live in nowadays.
ReplyDeleteI love it!
ReplyDeleteHi! The traffic signs are very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThat looks funny, I usually only notice if it's green or red. I hope I will not forget to cross the street looking at the symbols, lol !
ReplyDeleteCreative and colorful traffic light photos ~

How interesting. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI get a bit tired of all that gender attention, I have never felt discriminated when seeing an overpass with a man symbol, women are wearing pants too isn't it?
ReplyDeleteI agree with Marinne....Maybe we should be more concerned about things....like world peace, pollution and not worry how compassionate a traffic signal is?
ReplyDeleteThis is great! LGBT people have been discriminated against for generations and it is good to remind us all that such discrimination is not OK any longer. I think (hope) that most people on this side of the pond think that way, but the hold-out dinosaurs are very vocal. I can't imagine anything like these traffic lights happening here because of them.
ReplyDeleteThats different. I like the first one best.
ReplyDeleteWell, OK, it's nice - though it seems a little puerile, but maybe different symbols on traffic lights brighten things up a bit. We should perhaps have some with dogs and cats on too; oh, and maybe an older person. Must admit, I can't tell the sex of the couple holding hands, however closely I look.
ReplyDeleteForgot to mention - much more importantly - the world's first traffic lights were installed 150 years ago on 9th December 1868 at Parliament Square in London.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! This is a very progressive move.
