Day 9 Grand Canyon 2

Four of us met up at 6am to return to the Canyon and watch the sunrise.

It was better than the sunset as the rocks were lit to a golden colour bit by bit. We were all lost in our own thoughts witnessing the beauty of this vast canyon once again.

After grabbing a quick bite to eat and drink at the Visitors' centre, David went off to take a few more photos before his helicopter ride over the canyon.

Three of us had decided to use the time to walk down into the Canyon. We took a bus along the rim to the trail head and walked down to the first stopping point.

We would not have time to get to the bottom and back but were keen to see the view from a different perspective. It wasn't a difficult walk  down. The trail was quite wide in places, allowing people to pass by one another without too much effort.

I decided not to descend any further but  return to the rim, giving myself enough time to walk the few miles to where we would all be meeting in a couple of hours.

It is a paved walkway at the top allowing easy access for disabled users as well as cyclists

The sky was cloudless, the air warm and the scenery majestic. There were times when I had the place to myself which was very special.

We were all there at the meeting place. No late comers, this time! Stirling drove us to a supermarket to pick up something for lunch and then we sat at a picnic table in the tiniest of parks between 2 roads. David bought and ate the largest sandwich I have ever seen!
More desert landscapes.

Maud using her big toe to help her do some braiding on our journey to Loughlin where we would be spending the night.

We arrived late afternoon and went to have a look around. The hotel was on the banks of the Colorado River.

These waterfalls were in the entrance to the hotel, which was also a casino as were most of the hotels in the town.

That evening we all ate together in the hotel and then enjoyed a few drinks together in the warm evening air.We ended up having a really good laugh together and another very late night.

  8. What a great place - I have only been there once, and for just a couple of hours. I'd love to go back. Great pictures too!

  9. We made the mistake and visited the Grand Canyon in SUMMER (2011). SO MANY PEOPLE... I enjoyed seeing that area --but we need to go back when we can see more of it and hike down some... BUT--I do remember my first reaction of WOW when I first saw it....

I would enjoy a tour like you are on. You have lots of options as to what you can and want to do --and the entire group doesn't stay together the whole time... As I've told you, we are not 'tour' people --but someday, depending upon where we go, we'll probably have to or opt to take a tour... You have taken some GOOD ones.

Love following you on your trip... Like you, we saw Vegas ONCE ---and that was enough for us!!!! ha

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  10. Your posts bring back so many memories !! Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures at that time I filmed ! But we had put the whole trip on DVDs, as it was still the old system.
