Day 5 Yosemite

It was a gloriously sunny day as we left San Francisco for Yosemite National Park. The journey was over 150 miles so it was mid afternoon by the time we arrived. Winter storms have played havoc with the roads in Yosemite, two of which are still closed which meant we couldn't come into the park via the planned route so unfortunately  wouldn't be able to see the giant sequoia trees.

However the weather meant we had these magnificent views of the park.

Due to the amount of snow and ice still around the path to the Lower Yosemite Falls was closed so 5 of us decided to go to the Mirror Lake via the free shuttle service.

We walked along the valley to get to the bus stop which seemed much further away than our maps were showing.

Once on the bus we were surprised to find that the journey took us 45 mins! The driver told us that the route had been changed because of the road works that were taking place.

It meant we didn't have enough time to walk to the lake and back so we just had a quick walk viewing yet more of the fabulous scenery and wandered back to pick up the shuttle bus.

The return on the shuttle bus was even slower and we were an hour late meeting back up with our tour leader.  Had we known the extent of the bus detours we would have realised that we could have walked to and from Mirror Lake without any time issues whatsoever!

All was not lost and we would be back in the park tomorrow with more time to explore its treasures.

  1. I had no idea that the park had so many problems this past winter. I haven't been there for ages, so I'm glad you have another day to enjoy it, too. Love your pictures! :-)

  2. You got some lovely photos of Yosemite. My niece got married there at the Lodge in Jan 2016 and there was no snow. We decided against attending because we were leery of what the winter weather would be there. It apparently was quite balmy for the wedding. Looking forward to the next installment.

  3. Yosemite is on my bucket list. I'll get up there one day. Hopefully while I still have knees for the hiking :)

  4. I thought it might have resembled The Rockies more, but it looks quite different. It must be a great park when properly open.

  5. I celebrated my 50th birthday under the biggest Sequoia tree ! A pity that you couldn't see them. It was so hot when we were there and I always remember the good smell of the wood !
