Sand sculptures

These sculptures are being created by the banks of the River Thames. The sand looks perfect for sculpting.  I didn't wait to find out if it was a well known face he was sculpting.

This sculptor was interested in engaging people in a conversation about politics. He was discussing the forthcoming election for leader of the Labour party.

On the other side of The Thames near St Paul's was another sand sculpture. This was a promotion for the latest book by Lonely Planet. They were sculpting famous buildings from around the world. I'm sure I don't  need to tell you which ones they chose.

  1. Those are impressive sand sculptures - I'm always amazed how much time people put into something so transitory.

  2. Those are incredible sand sculptures! We have a sandcastle contest here in Portland in our town's square. They truck in several loads of sand and different organizations sculpt different creations.

  3. Very impressive and somehow poetic that they will not last long.

  4. Beautiful! I was just thinking, I wonder how they do the details on the tower so straight and perfect, and then you showed the artist applying a template. So smart!

  7. That is always a fascinating art to create all these things just with sand.

  10. Of all places in this world where I would never have expected to watch sand sculptures being created, the banks of the Thames would have ranked high! How very fascinating.

    1. Hi Janice, we finished the last of the five sculptures at around 6pm and started the 'take down' at 7pm. This is typical for a sand project. In this modern, techno age, we have found it very refreshing for our viewers to see this hands on creative process develop. The immediacy of this transitory medium mixed with happy nostalgic memories which sand seems to evoke, brings great pleasure to most visitors to our Weymouth based, sand sculpture attraction 'Sandworld' and to the commissions we undertake wherever we go in the world. Best wishes. Mark.
