Balloons

This is Heartbeat in Covent Garden. An art installation by the French artist Charles Petillon  and his first outside France.

It is 54m in length and 12m across, filling the roof space with white balloons.

Some of the balloons pulsate with light symbolising the heartbeat to represent the energy of this area.

I was there on Thursday, on its first day and the photographers  were out in force.

It felt like you were looking up at clusters of fluffy clouds.

The publicity information said there are 100,000 balloons which I doubt very much. However there are a considerable number of them floating above the market. The installation will be up for a month so it will be interesting to see if the balloons remain as inflated as they are now.

  1. Amazing shots of those balloons. Would be quite a mess to clean up though once they deflate.

  4. That's a great idea, it looks like it came out really well. It must be very impressive in person.

  7. As you said, like floating fluffy clouds. I've never known of balloons to stay inflated for that length of time. It will be interesting to see what happens.

  9. This is interesting but I found some of the pictures quite claustrophobic so don't know whether I'd want to visit. I imagine it would feel quite different when down on the ground floor.
    Have a lovely day.

  10. At first site I thought it was smoke, it is a rather "present" artwork that you can't miss. I wonder how long it will take they come down...

  13. The white clusters of balloons remind me of clouds too. Wondrous to see but also a wonder as to how they will eventually dispose of all the plastic.

  18. Beautiful ... That last picture looks like it could be that many! I m glad you mentioned wondering about whether they'll stay inflated, because I thought about that! I hope you'll go back toward the end and let us know. Or maybe deflating is part of what the artist wants to show ... Sort of balloon performance art.

  22. When I saw the first picture I thought "typical French" they use white baloons which is used in Belgium for funerals in some cases ! But then indeed I saw the clouds !

  24. I saw a report of the balloon installation and thought it would be a great photo opportunity - and seems that was correct.

There were really only pictures and a brief biog in the magazine - although I have been invited to 'pitch' other ideas and pictures at any time in the future - which is what I plan to do!

  25. Your comment was the first thing I thought about - how long will these balloons hold up? The artistic idea though, I Love - getting lost in the clouds!
