End of tour

This was the last day of the tour and before we returned to Mexico City we visited another Butterfly Sanctuary.

We arrived early and the workers were just arriving to open up their shops and eating places.
The water is already on the boil here.

Whilst the others were waiting for the guide I wandered off to see what I could find.
It was a very cloudy morning and the mist was still covering the trees so it was unlikely that any butterflies would be flying today.

I spotted these birds but I don't know what they are. I am sure there must be a fellow blogger who could educate me,

It was a steep climb up to where the butterflies were but I was not tempted to go by horse. Although steep it wasn't too far so only took about 40mins to get there.

At first we couldn't see the butterflies but then the guide pointed out  the clusters hanging from the trees.

Small and large groups of butterflies appeared as the mist drifted around us.

We had to be very careful where we were treading as there were so many butterflies lying on the ground. I thought they were dead but I was wrong.

We waited to see if the mist was going to clear but decided as we had seen the butterflies flying around at the other two reserves we would call it a day.

Despite the low cloud the scenery was still spectacular.

  2. Co-habitation taken to the extreme. Strange how different they look when not in bright sunshine.

  7. Their colours are almost the same as the trees, you hardly see them although they are with many of them!

  8. These are some of the best pictures of all, with the mist and the hanging clumps of butterflies. I love the sound of a "butterfly sanctuary." Your trip was a great success, if you ask me. I hope you think so, too. Thanks for sharing your pictures so generously. :-)

  11. That walk into the early morning mist was certainly worth it for that amazing spectacle. Chandeliers of Monarchs! Wonderful.

I'm sure those larger birds are grosbeaks - Black-headed Grosbeak?
