The fifteen billion pound railway

Crossrail is the  new high frequency and high capacity 73 mile railway, linking Reading and Heathrow in the West , to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the East. It is hoped that by carrying 1500 passengers in each train during the peak periods it will reduce crowding on the transport system. It is expected that 200 million passengers will travel on Crossrail each year.

This is a map of the route with the pink section showing the new tunnels.

This shows the Central London section of the route.

It has 21 km of new tunnels going under Central London which should be finished by this Spring although it will take another 3 - 4  years before it is operational.

These photos show the construction of the Canary Wharf Crossrail station in Docklands.

  2. I've been watching what happened the Reading end, you can see why the train fairs cost so much

  3. I'm thinking, how could they possibly put anymore tunnels under London!

  4. I have undertaken a little research on Crossrail, but the maps you have shown make things very clear. It really will change the way people use The Tube when it opens. The massive project was featured on one of our commercial television news services last week, with much hyperbole.

  5. Wow! that's a huge amount of passengers in one haul ... that's got to reduce traffic but I'm sure it came with a multi billion $$ price tag

  6. Fascinating stuff! Here in Portland, most of our light rail system is above-ground. Above ground has it's issues (security, fare collections, and conflicts with traffic and pedestrians getting hit) and there's many people who wish our transit agency would've invested in an underground system instead.

  7. Wow that is one big construction site. I hope it eases the transport problem sounds like it should. I was interested to see Forest Gate on the rail line. That is where my dad grew up and where I used to visit my grandparents back in the 40's. I believe the type of inhabitants has changed a lot nowadays.

  9. That is huge. Although it will be a source of constant noise and dust for sometime, I'm sure it'll give great benefits later.

  12. Mass transit is a wonderful asset for a city! I loved traveling all over NYC on the subway when I lived there, Denver, Colorado only has limited above ground light rail

  13. We were so impressed by mass transit ... It is very poor in both places where we spend our time.
