Chihuly's chandelier

The wonderfully ornate entrance to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London,

with the statues of Inspiration and Knowledge on either side.

Once inside you are greeted by this magnificent chandelier which many of you (especially if you have been to Seattle) will recognise as the work of Dale Chihuly.

He has designed a series of chandeliers but this one was specifically designed for this entrance in 2001.  Made from blown glass and steel, it weighs 1724 kilos.

I was careful not to stand beneath it!

  1. Good plan not standing under that very heavy chandelier. It is beautiful, although I am not sure what it represents. The green hues from a distance remind me of a tangle of grasses or garden snakes? :)

  6. In and of itself -- I like it. It doesn't seem to be at home there, though.

  9. His work is beautiful and recognizable... We have been to his studio/workshop. It's actually in Tacoma, Seattle's lesser-known stepsister, but a nice smaller city ... (My son lives there).

  10. No I wouldn't have stood under a chandelier weighing 1724 kilos ... it's pretty to look at but waaay.... too heavy to be hanging from any ceiling, I like how the light catches the coloured swirls.

  15. It is a wonderful piece of Art but does it suit its environment?

  16. I'll admit to never having heard of Dale Chihuly. He clearly has original ideas. I'm a little with Diane b as the chandelier seems out of place in V&A and should be in a museum of modern art? Unless of course the V&A has lots of modern art anyway - I see another post on the way.
