More travels in Afghanistan

These photos were taken in 1978 whilst travelling from London To Kathmandu. I think they were taken when travelling from Herat to Kabul across the desert in a coach.

The coach attracted attention wherever we went. Although the coach looks modern it did not have a toilet  nor  air conditioning and this was in August. Not sure why anyone in their right mind would be crossing a desert in Afghanistan in mid summer!

On the journey we came across nomadic tribes.

We were welcomed into the tents to take photos.

Tea shops were a must in every small town.

  4. Wow, these shots are very cool. Can't help but wonder how the people in the images fared during all the chaos since then.

  6. The tea shops looked like an excellent way to socialise. But I wonder what people did, if they wanted a quiet and private space inside their tent or outside it.

  7. A remarkable looking country - although I wonder if it will ever be accessible in a sensible way again. I hope so.

  10. What an amazing adventure! I also wonder why anyone would cross a desert in August, but you are strong and resilient. I also wondered if anyone in those pictures is still alive today.

  12. I am glad you were temporarily out of your right mind and crossed that desert in mid summer! A wonderful adventure and incredible memories . I love that you got invited into tents, met “real” people, ...you were (and are) definitely a traveler, not just a tourist.

  13. Interesting to see how much international travel has changed since the 70s. You probably saw a lot of unspoiled areas. Seems like now everything has been overrun by tourists.

  14. There you digged deeply in your memories ! A pity what this country has become ! It looks very much like Morocco or Egypt ! and my preferred mode of transport the camel! I really miss them !
