Last week I went to Zagreb for a pre Christmas trip with three friends. Every year we go to a different city to enjoy the Christmas festivities and markets. Zagreb is the capital of Croatia and is home to 800,000 inhabitants. We arrived at mid-day and spent the next few hours wandering around the town.
The Cathedral. We went inside to have a look around but I didn't take any photos which is a pity because I learned later that the two huge chandeliers were from a casino in Las Vegas, gifted to the Cathedral by a resident who was working on the refurbishment of one of the casinos in Vegas.
The medieval defensive walls of the city.
There are lots of narrow cobbled streets in the old town.
Down this street there were replicas of the trades that used to be practised here.
This used to be a bakery.
St Mark's Church with the coat of arms of Croatia and Zagreb reproduced using roof tiles.
There are 200 gas lamps in and around St Mark's Square and we were there as one of the two gaslighters was going to each lamp to light it. They return in the morning to dim the lights.
Around the corner from the Square was a small Christmas market with a few food and drink stalls. Time to sample some mulled wine and enjoy the view.
After enjoying a drink we walked up to the top of this tower to enjoy views over the town as dusk descended.

That cathedral and its spires is spectacular!! And, is that a book store? I would think I'm in heaven if I found something like that.
ReplyDeleteHello, what a beautiful city and a lovely tour. I like that book store. Lovely sunset captures. The Cathedral is beautiful. Enjoy your day and have a great new week!
ReplyDeleteI must say that so many of these East European cities are very beautiful. It's good to see too that they want to preserve their unique culture, unlike ourselves.
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful city. Thanks for showing it at Christmas.
ReplyDeleteA cathedral with a casino connection makes it all the more interesting! You are fortunate, indeed, to be in such relatively close proximity to such wonderful places as Zagreb.
ReplyDeleteThese old Eastern Bloc cities look so appealing and Zagreb is no exception. R remembers the lamp lighters in the north of England.
ReplyDeleteThe architecture in the city really is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThat looks awesome.
ReplyDeleteWhat a neat city. Spectacular sunsets too!
ReplyDeleteThis was great tour. Isn't it fascinating that those gas lamps are still in use?
ReplyDeleteNice sunset pics! You travel to the most interesting places!
ReplyDeleteInteresting to see an "unknown" city for me.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful city. I notice that everything seems very clean and well taken care of. Love those sunset pictures over the city. :-)
ReplyDeleteahhhhhhhhhhhhh, I miss book stores.
ReplyDeleteBut I have about 6thousand books on my Kindle

Wonderful! Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteMarvelous church architecture.
Great sunset photo!
The city looks great in sunset. Is that an outdoor barbershop?
ReplyDeleteI love all the trade replicas, wouldn't you love an outdoor barber?
ReplyDeleteLovely cathedral. Still trying to imagine the Las Vegas touch being an enhancement. What a lovely, clean, uncluttered city.
ReplyDeleteWow - beautiful shots.
ReplyDeleteThat's an impressive looking book shop! So many parts of Europe that I have not seen!
ReplyDeleteCheers - Stewart M - Melbourne
PS: comments now seem to be working properly - but only from my lap top!
I visited Croatia so many times, but I realize that I have never been to Zagreb. Such a nice atmosphere. Looks really lovely.

I wonder how many churches would accept the gift of chandeliers from a casino?! Beautiful city and the simple decorations are so nice.
ReplyDeleteOh those books! Love those books. I used to live in Yugoslavia (in what is now the Croatian part) a long time ago, but never made it to Zagreb. I definitely have to go back.
ReplyDeleteWhat an excellent idea ! Looks real nice ! I want to visit some other Eastern countries next year, there is one roundtrip of 10 days I guess. And here they throw bombs into Christmas markets ! A shame !
