With not so many miles to cover today we had a more leisurely drive through the White Mountains. We drove to Lincoln and then followed the Kancamagus Pass through the National Forest. We stopped at various points along the way to admire the views. We are now beginning to see the changes in colour on the trees. It is the variety of colours that makes it look different to home, particularly the deep reds of the the maple trees. Still quite a number of trees haven't started to change colour yet as the hot weather in September has delayed the Autumn. Nevertheless it was still a spectacular drive.
Once through the beautiful White Mountains National Park we made our way from New Hampshire into Maine just stopping for some lunch which was a very welcome clam chowder.
Many brick built buildings and Irish pubs.
There was a huge cruise ship in port.
Various sight seeing tours available but after being in the car for so long we decided to walk around downtown and the Old Port.
One of the cobbled streets in the Old Town.
Lots of places were advertising lobster so we decided to try some here at Bull Feeney's . Unfortunately by the time we ordered they had run out! Had to settle for haddock - a poor second.
I woke early the next morning just so I could watch the sun rise over Portland Harbour from the huge window in our room.
We went for a swim before breakfast. What a great way to start the day.
This was like a walk down memory lane! My husband and I have very pleasant memories of Maine - over 22 years ago! You have chosen the perfect time to visit - after most tourists and before the winter starts! Have a wonderful weekend!
ReplyDeleteThis is the right time to see the beautiful colouring trees there, great tour you made!
ReplyDeletePortland sounds like a very sophisticated city from what I have read, but wait, this is Portland Maine, not Oregon. Autumn in the nice areas of the US must be truly gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures! I'm glad you chose this time for a visit to the East Coast, because I will get to see all the sights, too. Nice beginning for your trip. :-)
ReplyDeleteLeaves are slow to turn this year here in Toronto as well. Years since I was in Maine!
ReplyDeleteLovely countryside and fall colours. I have been out in that area, but never in Portland.
ReplyDeleteI remember spending a day there, we took a ferry ride, intended for the locals to get to the various islands in the area but it made a great way to get a feel for the ocean. Nice shots!
ReplyDeleteI've never been in maine... but I'll visit that place.. to me it ia must see place..
ReplyDeleteAahhhh....the "other" Portland! :) Lovely fall colors on those trees.
ReplyDeleteWonderful wanderings in many gorgeous settings. Lucky you. Sigh
ReplyDeleteHello, what a lovely tour. Gorgeous fall colors and trees. The Harbor view is beautiful. I hope you enjoyed your visit to our country. Lovely photos. Thanks so much for your comment and visit. Happy Sunday, enjoy your new week ahead!

Those autumn colours are ones we can only find in some areas of our evergreen countryside.
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting my blog too :)
Just like the first comment here - I have fond memories of Maine - we did a great day walk in the White Mountains and spent the evening of that day slowly eating a large tub of ice-cream - it only seemed to be sold by the gallon!

Glad you get to see some Fall Colors ... I have always wanted to go to New England in Autumn --but have never been there. I have a friend who lives in Maine and she keeps talking about the Fall colors being late. We don't have much color here in TN either... We did see some color when we were in NC recently.... I hope you saw that blog post...
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Betsy
I visited the Portland Head Lighthouse on a cruise up to Canada. It was such a beautiful sight! The foliage there was very colorful.
