USA Day 7 Niagara

Left Harrisburg in the pouring rain again for the long drive to Niagara (500km). We stopped in a small town for lunch. I ordered a quesadilla with memories of Mexico. Unfortunately it bore no resemblance to Mexico and was so greasy, yuk.

At last by late afternoon we were here and look at that sky.

This is the trip I have been waiting for, the one on the bucket list.
The area around the Falls was quite tacky with lots of kiosks selling food, tee-shirts etc.

But then I saw the  Falls. It was impressive looking at the amount of water coming over the falls.
The Maid of the Mist that we would be going on to get up close and personal with the Falls and wet, of course.

The obligatory blue ponchos. They are red if you are getting a boat from the Canadian side. Follow me onto the Maid of the Mist and enjoy the ride.

The Falls are in two parts. Rainbow Falls on the US side and Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side.

The sound of the water and the volume were incredible.

The boat took us to both sides of the Falls and into the spray. It was like being in the waterfall. What a unique experience. Awesome, breathtaking - all the superlatives.

Couldn't stop taking photos. Stupidly forgot about the spray but looking at them now I can still feel that spray on my face.

I moved to the other side of the boat to get closer as we passed the Horseshoe Falls (Canadian side)

It was exhilarating. Loved the experience.

Just hoped the boat was stable!

The perfect rainbow.

Off to cross the bridge from the USA into Canada to see the Falls from that side. Most of us went across but unfortunately A. from South Africa was refused entry as she didn't realise she needed a visa.

You can see why they are called the horseshoe falls from this side.

One last photo.

  9. We saw some spectacular scenery in Canada but nothing beats the thrill of seeing the falls and we of course were in the red ponchos. Closer to the Horseshoe Falls, there was a lot of spray mist on the land. I doubt plants and grass ever had to be watered.

  11. We have been there years ago on the Canadian side, I was disappointed, I thought it would fall from a mountain deep down and I had to bent over to see the water falling down, lol ! Our coats were orange at that time !

I don't know if you have been or if it's in your bucket list, but you should also pay a visit to the Iguaçu falls in the Brazilian/Argentinian border, as they are even bigger than Niagara. It's all very impressive!

  15. It sure is a magical experience and I agree Niagara town is tacky. Niagara on the Lake is beautiful though.
