World Heritage Week

This week is World Heritage week and standing in the centre of Trafalgar Square is a replica of the Arch of Triumph which stood in the city of Palmyra, Syria. The 2000 yr old ancient monument  was destroyed by the Islamic State (Daesh) in August 2015.

This recreation was made possible by the Institute of Digital Archaeology using 3D technology and pictures of the original. The Oxford based Institution is a partnership between Oxford University, Harvard University and the government of the United Arab Emirates. The arch is one third the size of the original.

  3. Destroying such historical monuments proves again how important school and education is ! Only illiterate people can do that, they can't even read the Koran and only listen to "his masters voice" !

  4. Showing the futility of destruction in the name of religion.

  8. It's a tragedy that a 1/3 replica is all that is left. Religion should make us better people, not close-minded, violent, and destructive. Such a shame.

  11. Came in from Writer Cramps...It so sad when people become so angry because of religion. Our local Catholic church was just burn to the ground.
If you fine the time stop in for cup of coffee.

  12. I want to weep every time I read about such wanton destruction of ancient wonders. I'm glad they could at least reconstruct a beautiful replica of this one.
