I am taking advantage of the pleasant weather to continue to explore my new surroundings. I am always keen to ask around locally for places to visit especially on foot.
A 10 min walk from where I am now living is a very large area full of allotments. These plots of land are rented by local people to grow vegetables or flowers. Normally only allotment holders are allowed access but here I discovered that the public can visit at the weekend. There are pathways between the rows of allotments making it easy to wander around.
The individual plots are large enough for you to erect a shed and a greenhouse.
Just getting it ready to sow.
Quite a few plots had raised beds.
Potatoes were the main crop on this plot.
Flowers were the choice here.
I even discovered beehives in one corner. Everyone was very friendly and chatty and there was even a cafe where I could get a bacon sandwich and mug of tea for just £2.50!
I like the rebel who grows wildflowers, and the wildflowers will bring more pollinators to the gardens.
ReplyDeleteAU$5.00 is very cheap for tea and a sandwich is very cheap.
Perhaps our community gardens are locked at night, but otherwise I can't see how anyone could be kept out of ours during the day. I walk through the large St Kilda community garden at times, just for a look and see.
Allowing people in to wander round the allotments is a really good idea and a lovely way to meet different folks. Providing refreshments is another way to make a few bob, too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea and wonderful place to visit. I like that refreshments are available too. Great way to spend an afternoon.
ReplyDeleteI've always been impressed by the allotments I've seen. Did it make you want to embrace gardening?
ReplyDeleteWell, where to start? I've been catching up and your photos of Sloane Dquare are absolutely wonderful. What a lot of work has gone into making all those wonderful displays.
ReplyDeleteThen the windmill. I love to see heritage buildings looked after and yes a completely different view through that window I imagine. I wonder if there is a photo/painting somewhere? I suppose not.
And that's good you can wander around the allotments. Bob's father had one at one time, during the war years I think but when I saw it it was not being used and was overgrown.
That's a good price for a sammie and cuppa, here a cup of tea would cost about $7 nzd.
ReplyDeleteA bacon sandwich and mug of tea for just £2.50 ... that's a very good price.
ReplyDeleteThe allotment looks very nice and lovely to meet and chat with the gardeners.
All the best Jan
What a fantastic find. It is wonderful that you are exploring your new neighborhood on foot and that the allotments welcome visitors on weekends. Discovering a community with friendly gardeners and a great cafe is the perfect way to spend a Saturday morning.

You brought back childhood memories ! My Grandpa had an allotment and it was so nice for me as a child. He grew all kinds of vegetables which were very precious just after 1945 where there was nothing to eat. The ones you show look very similar he also had a little shed for the garden tools.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like you found a way to meet the locals and make new friends. Lovely allottments.
