Stockholm

Last week I visited Stockholm for a few days. This was my first visit to Sweden and hopefully not my last. I hadn't realised that Stockholm was built on 14 different islands with another 30,000 making up the archipelago. Approximately just 150 of the islands are inhabited.

Many views of the city were taken either from one of the many bridges or from a boat.

The Old Town, Gamla Stan, is full of medieval narrow cobbled lanes and historic buildings. Visiting early in the morning, I managed to avoid the crowded streets, full of tourists from the many cruise ships that are regular visitors to Stockholm.

The sculpture of St George and the dragon was created around 1485 from materials such as oak and elk antlers.

This red brick building is Stadshuset, City Hall. You can go up the tower to get a bird's eye view of the city.

  2. And climb the tower you did. While some streets and lanes seem a little hilly, it all looks very flat. Being Sweden, I am sure they know what they are doing about rising sea levels. Thanks for showing us a place I know very little about.

  5. I love those narrow streets especially, and also the cathedral, and the water. Well, all of it, actually. Thank you for taking me along on your trip to this beautiful city. :-)

  6. I've only ever been to Stockholm's airport (passing through), but would love to visit Stockholm some day. What I've seen of southern parts of Sweden it is very beautiful.

  7. I have been there and was also surprised by all of the water and bridges. We were actually guests of Volvo and they took us from one end of the country to the other,

  9. It looks a beautiful city -- I had no idea about how it was built on islands.

  10. Welcome to Sweden! Stockholm is a beautiful city and I love that it is surrounded by water everywhere you go. On your next visits you can go to the countryside that is gorgeous, and of course Gothenburg :)

  11. Wonderful! Pity that graffiti is ubiquitous - though it's comforting to know that other countries have morons too..!

  12. Wonderful photos. I saw the Vasa and took lots of photos of Gamla Stan as I was intrigued with the narrow, cobbled streets and the old houses. And of course the boats. I remember buying food along the waterfront and sitting for a long time just watching the boats. Sweet memories!
