South West Coast Path

I am on a family holiday staying in Devon very close to the Dorset border. Yesterday I went for a walk along the South West Coast Path.

The path goes along the cliff tops but the walk I had planned couldn't be completed because of subsidence. I had hoped to walk from Lyme Regis to Seaton and then get a lift back so I decided to walk for a few miles and return along the same path

The path was through woodland but there had been a storm the night before and it was very muddy as well as having numerous tree roots crisscrossing it making it an uneven and difficult path.

But every now and then there was a break in the trees to reveal views of the sea.

I was so busy looking at the sea views that I didn't notice the chalk cliffs rising behind me.

I took a detour from the path to follow another route up to the top of the chalk cliffs

Moving above the woodland I walked across a meadow.

Well actually walked up the meadow. It was incredibly steep and the path went up the side of the field rather than traversing the field. The signs asked you to keep to the path! Yikes it was tough.
Finally at the top.
I surprised a fox which soon disappeared into the undergrowth. Not like the urban foxes that are far more brazen.

Just to the side of the field was this stone shelter and just look at the views.

I continued on my way  and returned to the Coast path walking back to Lyme Regis.

When I got down to the sea the tide was out. AS this is The Jurassic Coast it gave me an opportunity to look for fossils.

I spotted a few on some of the larger rocks.

There had been a landslide here not very long ago.  I decided it was wise to stay away from underneath the cliffs.

  5. What a great place to visit! I love those views of the sea, and I'm glad you were being careful. Those signs would have given me pause. :-)

  8. Not a huge distance by your standards but a high difficulty factor perhaps. The fox photo was a good piece of work. It is nice to be surprised by occasional views than overwhelmed by a constant view.

  10. That looks like a lovely walk but I guess you would have to be reasonably fit to do the whole thing. Wonderful coastal views as well. Enjoy the rest of your week.

  14. What stunning views and the fossils are a fantastic bonus. Wow. I wouldn't mind an out and back hike when there was all that beauty and surprises. I am not sure what subsidence is and will go visit Google .

  16. Looks like a grand walk - with challenges. Like the shelter - looks like a refurbished lime-kiln!

  17. Nice post - many years ago I spent a week on the Coast Path on the north side (if that makes sense) seem to have two gradients - steep up and steep down - boy did I sleep well that week!
