National Theatre

The national Theatre on the South bank has three theatres and presents over 20 new productions a year. They launched National Theatre live in 2009 and have  screened a number of productions live around the world. Some are classed 'as live' to account for the different time zones. I have seen many excellent productions at these theatres at very reasonable prices.

It is now possible to have a bird's eye view of what happens behind the scenes. The Sherling High-Level walk gives you an idea of how scenery and props are created.

There are boards around the walkway to inform visitors about the scenery, props, costumes that are currently being created.

Visiting the walkway is free so if you are around or visiting London it is worth checking out their website here

During August there was a free theatre set up outside.

  4. I will definitely get to this place when I arrive in London, whenever that might happen. It's too bad you're so far away! :-)

  5. We could do an outside theater here in December...never in August...unless we wanted to cart patrons away on stretchers from heat stroke. Sigh

  11. What a good idea that is. Dare I say, better than some of the modern plays they put on?

  16. We love the South Bank and go there regularly, however that's mainly so my daughter can watch the skateboarders! I will make a note of this and then we will go along to see inside. Thanks for letting us know xx

  18. That's fascinating - but scary, for those of us who have a problem with heights!! Free theatre is a great way to tout for business - I was hooked after the first production I went to many years ago, and I'm sure others would be too if they got the chance to see it!! Have a great week ahead!

  19. I will have to do that next time I am in London as it looks so interesting. I have taken the behind-the-scenes tour at the Guthrie in Minneapolis where you can watch sets and props being built and it's fascinating.

  21. What a great experience. We have done that in many theatres here because our daughter has taken us to where she was working including the Sydney opera house. She would love to work in that theatre.
